Forum FAQ

Why a forum to discuss scientific topics?

This competition is designed in a way to stimulate you and your colleagues to discuss online your research and to debate important issues related to stem cell research by networking on the web.

Is it possible to join the discussion in Russian or in German?

The discussion is possible in three languages: English, German and Russian. You can choose any competition topic and join the discussion in any of the three forums. FAQs, Competition Rules, Forum Rules and Competition Topics are in English only. Feel free to discuss in your mother tongue.

Your Short Report must be in English, so that it can be judged by the international Jury and published by the CTT online Journal in case you accumulate 10 points.

Why should I register?

Only the participants who join the competition by registering a nickname and an email address are allowed to take part in the online discussion and therefore be able to upload a short report (once they have accumulated 10 points).

Registration is free and offers an extended range of features, including:

  • Reading other peoples’ threads and quoting them or replying to them
  • Creating new threads
  • Editing your posts
  • Attaching files
  • Receiving email notification of replies to posts and threads you specify
  • Sending private messages to other members or to the moderator
  • Receiving assistance from the moderators and from the forum helpline
  • Checking the points you accumulated
How do I register?

You register on the competition webpage by clicking on the “Create an account” link. You will be asked to choose a nickname, a password and enter a valid email address. Then click on a link in the activation email sent to your email address. Once you have done this, you will be registered.

Note that even though you are entering your email address, you are still anonymous until 7 November 2011. You’ll be able to allow other registered users to contact you via email, but the system won’t display your email address.

I forgot my password. What can I do?

If you forget your password, you can click on the “Password Forgotten” link. This link brings up a page where you should enter your registered email address. An email will be sent to that address shortly, with instructions for choosing a new password.

How is the forum structured?

On the Award website you can find a section “News”, which contains notifications and updates or other relevant information, action “Current Point Score” where points assigned are shown, and a navigation index which takes you to the forum, to your private messaging, to your user profile or to the forum FAQs.

How do I navigate around?

The forum contains threads (conversations on a topic) which are made up of individual posts.

A thread is a conversation between forum members. Each thread starts out as a single post and grows as more individual posts are added by different participants.

To read a thread, click on its title. Each post in a thread is created by a member using a nickname.

To start a new topic, simply click on the “New Topic” button. You can edit your post every time you want after publishing it.

To reply to a topic, simply click on the “Reply” button at the bottom of the page.

To quote a post, simply click on the “Quote” button: the reference will appear in a new message form.

The thread with the most recent activity is at the top.

What is the Navigation Bar?

The navigation bar at the top of the right side has links to help you move around.

With one click you can reach areas such as: Forum – Forum FAQ – Private messaging – User settings – Competition Rules – Logout .

How do I mark a thread?

At the bottom of the page you can find three icons. By clicking on the binoculars you request notifications concerning every new comment to a thread. By clicking on the seal you give your appreciation for a thread. The seal icon appears next to the thread title when it has many replies. The third icon is only for the Administrator team.

What if I see something offensive or scientifically dishonest?

You can find a “Report” button at the bottom of each message. This button allows you to alert the moderation staff to anything which you find to be offensive or inappropriate. You may also send an email directly to maximow-award@spam is badctt-journal.com

How do I change my password?

The navigation bar at the top of the right side has a link to the "User settings" section. In this area you may change your password and mail address. You may also choose among three notification options. Remember that no member in the forum can see your settings.

What is private messaging?

Registered members may send messages to other members of this forum using the private messaging system.

To send an email to another member, you can enter the private messaging area and click on the “New message” button. This will open a page providing a form where you can enter your message.

By clicking the “Search” button, you can visualize the list of the forum members’ names and select one. When you have finished typing your message, press the “Send” button and your message will be sent instantly.

In the “Inbox” and in the “Outbox” you can find all the messages you have received or sent.You will also receive email notification about any new messages to the email address you registered with if you choose so in your user settings.

How do I receive email notifications?

In the "User settings" area it is possible to select among three options. You may receive a notification for each new message posted, or only one notification per day which sums up all updates, or you can request to receive no email notifications.

What is the scoring system used by the moderation team?

Every contribution to the forum discussion will be judged by the moderation team. The general criteria are interactivity and content. Points will be assigned for good interactivity level and for appropriate quoting.

A scientific moderation team composed primarily of scientists who have expertise in current stem cell research areas will evaluate the quality of each contribution and will assign points for innovative points of view, accurate analysis and understanding, correct and complete comments.

How do I log out?

You can find the logout button in the navigation bar at the top of the right hand side of the page. Click on it to log out. A message will appear with the request to complete the procedure. In any case by leaving the connection to your browser you log out automatically.
